Avorians 165

Windsor CC 157

Windsor lost by 12 runs

To prepare for the tough season ahead, Windsor Cricket Club headed into deepest Surrey to play a strong Avorians CC, who fielded no less than 8 top class Australian cricketers.

In a lovely setting for cricket, Windsor bowled first and straight away, Warren Griffiths and Windsor's own, young aussie Tristan O'Shannasy looked dangerous using the swinging conditions to their advantage. Both Avorian openers looked uncomfortable but rode there luck well, until O'Shannassey bowled another great delivery to take his first wicket for Windsor.

In the search for further wickets, it was time then for the experienced spin duo of Wayne Spence and Raul Mohindru. Both Windsor stalwarts bowled very well and were supported by some excellent fielding, Raul showing great accuracy taking 3-35 and Wayne Spence showing fighting spirit after early assaults by the batsman, coming back to take two wickets.

It was then time for the part time bowlers to finish off due to the 8 over per bowler restriction. Matt Greene and acting skipper in the absence of Deri Watkins, Pete Thompson showed that Windsor also have depth in the bowling department bowling the last 10 overs for 34 runs and taking 3 wickets between them. A promising 1st half effort kept the Surrey championship side to 165.

Now it was Windsors turn to bat, Andy Chorley and Craig Bird opening up, unfortunately after looking comfortable together both got out quite cheaply, Matt Greene and Brian Davies took up the challenge, again both bats looking good then falling to poor shots, young Mike Gould impressed again with his ability and temperament scoring an elegant 24 unfortunately getting out when trying to push the score along. The the middle order tried, valiantly to push the score along, but were seeping wickets regularley. Windsor edged closer to the target but neither colt Ollie Smith and Old pro Wayne Spence could get the 12 required of the last over which would have claimed a famous victory.

An impressive start for Windsor against a very good Surrey Championship side, not once did the Windsor team look out classed, if it wasn’t for some poor shot selection by some of the senior bats Windsor would have won comfortably. As the season approaches, the team which will be selected to take on the Thames Valley's finest, is beginning to take shape and it is looking very promising indeed
