Windsor return to winning ways

On a balmy afternoon in picturesque Amersham, Windsor were asked to bowl first in a crucial bottom of the table clash. Tall boy Huggins and miserly skipper Watkins set about the Amersham top order with plenty of aggression, offering nothing loose for much of the first hour. Indeed, by drinks at 17 overs, Amersham had managed only 28 runs. Huggins removed Andrews with the help of a blinding catch by Vice Skipper Thompson, and then Stephenson soon followed thanks to a three card trick from Watkins.

The introduction of Mohindru brought quick results, with fast hands Clifford doing his bit behind the stumps. First a blinding catch followed by a smart piece of stumping soon saw off Viney and Aylott. Veteran Wayne Spence and skipper Watkins then inspired the Windsor side with a couple of breathtaking run outs, Spence in particular rolling back the years. Mohindru carried on nagging away, finishing with 4 for 38, just deserts for some mystical tweakers.

Amersham finished with 155, 30 short of par and they will have been disappointed with a tame finish to the innings.

In reply Bird set about the attack with his usual blend of stout defence and flashing drives. On 16 he tried one big wipe too many, and was taken by a smart catch off opening bowler Davies. The usual middle order collapse followed, with Lishman cleaning out new boy Mathews and old stager Chorley in quick succession. Davies looked solid for a few overs before edging one outside the off stump, leaving Thompson and the erratic Huggins at the wicket. Windsor were rocking at 47 for 5. Thompson dropped anchor, applying the sort of grit and determination that has been lacking in the star packed Windsor top order. In total contrast, Huggins blazed from the off, spraying the Amersham attack to all parts of the ground. Spurred on by his glamorous girlfriend watching from the sidelines, Huggins recorded 11 4's and 3 6's in an all action unbeaten 66. It was fitting that the rock solid Thompson struck the winning runs as this kind of application is exactly what skipper Watkins will be asking for at home against Teddington on Saturday.

Windsor Suffered Second Straight Loss

WAYWARD bowling cost Windsor dear at Home Park on Saturday when their impressive 246-7 was passed with ease by Marlow. It was their second straight league defeat after an impressive start to the campaign but the two losses could not have been more different. The previous week they were skittled for 73 in a quagmire at North Maidenhead but the runs were in plentiful supply last weekend after being asked to bat first on a scorching wicket. Chris Bird (17) and Andy Chorley got Windsor off to a solid start. Greene and Chorley consolidated matters, taking the score up to 100-3 when the latter fell for 47.

Peter Thompson set about the Marlow attack with gusto and was ably supported by Aussie new boy Matt Greene, who made a stylish 51 before he and Thompson (47) both fell approaching the final assault. Skipper Deri Watkins (25) hammered some late blows to boost the score. Marlow set off in pursuit as if they had a bus to catch, taking 40 off the first six overs off spinners Wayne Spence and Raul Mohindru.

Paskin and Gidman took a liking to the home park track and with some aggressive stroke play. Normal new ball pair, Mark Huggins and Warren Griffiths, fared little better were not spared the onslaught, with the lanky Griffiths in particular taking some frightful stick, going for 34 in just four overs.

The introduction of Watkins slowed the scoring, but by now Windsor were well and truly on the back foot. Both openers fell to Watkins, the first Windsor bowler to deliver a consistent line and length but Marlow remained in charge and the South African Kleusch kept his nerve to steer the side to a five-wicket win with an over to spare.

Watkins was in no doubt where his side lost it. “We bowled on the wrong side of the wicket too often and they were able to get off to a flyer and we were always chasing the game after that. “It meant we had to try and contain them as they got nearer rather than attack and made their job much easier. At this level you cannot afford the one or two loose balls an over we were giving them. In Division 2A or 2B you will often get away with it but not here, they get punished. We have to do better than that in future games. It was a great batting track and the outfield was lightning quick, if anything it quickened up for them but I was pleased with the batting side of it. We also dropped three catches which could have been the difference between winning or losing.

“There is no panic setting in. Of the last two games the first one was effectively lost on the toss of a coin. In this game we had chances to their openers early. If we had our score suddenly looks a big total. We could just have easily have won both of these games, no one has stuffed us yet.”

Windsor get a Saturday off this weekend. Their opponents were to be Hounslow but the side folded in the pre-season. The following week they face struggling Marlow Park.

Run Fest leaves Windsor Feeling Empty.

After being asked to bat first on a scorcher at home park, Windsor amassed an impressive 246 - 7 against Marlow on Saturday. In a run packed afternoon however, this was not enough as Marlow scraped home with an over to spare and 4 wickets in hand. Bird and Chorley got Windsor off to a solid start before Bird nicked one behind attempting an ambitious back foot wipe. Joel followed hitting carelessly skywards off the front foot, before Greene and Chorley consolidated, taking the score up to 100 - 3.

With a solid platform, the removal of Chorley, playing down the Piccadilly line to a straight one, only brought the swashbuckling Hollywood Huggins to the wicket who began with a few lusty blows. However, the strapping right hander was soon dismissed aiming one too many over the sight screens. Thompson set about the Marlow attack with gusto, playing shots all round the wicket and will be disappointed not to have notched his 1st division one 50. Aussie new boy Greene made a stylish 51 before he and Thompson both fell approaching the final assault. Skipper Watkins and veteran Spence then applied the final acceleration, finishing with some hammer blows to give Windsor and impressive 246 - 7.

In reply Marlow set off like a runaway train, taking 40 off the first 6 overs from Spence and Mohindru. Paskin and Gidman took a liking to the home park track and with some aggressive stroke play Windsor skipper Watkins was soon looking around the field for options with the ball. New ball boys Huggins and Griffiths were not spared the onslaught, with the lanky Griffiths in particular taking some frightful stick. The introduction of Watkins slowed the scoring, but by now Windsor were well and truly on the back foot.

Both openers fell to Watkins applying some much needed consitency of line and length, and as Spence took over he removed Fisher and Peacock, the latter due to a fine piece of glove work from Clifford. Even with a smart run out by Watkins, it was too little too late as South African Kleusch continued putting the bad ball away. Huggins and Spence gave it everything in one final effort from Windsor to steal the game back, but the visitors eventually got home with an over to spare.

With a week off next week due to Hounslow folding, Windsor will be wondering how they allowed this one to get away. The answer however is simple. In division one cricket, you bowl poorly to good players and you get punished.
