Highs to Lows…. Total disaster for Windsor

Windsor 79 all out
Cove 79 for 0 (10 overs)

After a great performance last week, Windsor hit rock bottom with possibly the worst performance skipper Thompson has seen from a Windsor side!

After losing the toss Windsor were inserted on a strangely soft wicket, disaster struck 1st ball with the loss of the inform Craig Bird to a great in swinging yorker. This brought Mirza to the crease. Thompson was his normal defiant self, until he fell in the 8th over, this brought the flashing blade of Gould to the crease who looked imperious played great shots of front and back foot. However, he then fell to a great catch in the covers. Another flashing blade came next in the form of Granger, hitting a succession of fours until he hit the ball in the air one to many times and was caught. A collapse ensued until Clarke, Mohindru and Baumgartner dug dig, showing the top order up. They stopped the rot, but only for a little while, Windsor being eventually bowled for a pathetic 79.

The Cove batsmen set about the miserly 79 with little issue, smashing there way to a Win in 10 overs.

Windsor face Chesham next week and will regroup this week with extended training sessions, they know now they have to fight for every point!

Windsor have that sparkle!!

Windsor 1’s Vs Marlow 1’s 11th June 2005

Windsor’s start to there campaign had not got off to the start they had wanted, in the 1st few games the bowling was good but the batting just had not clicked, in recent weeks the batting had been getting much better with good bowling performances on good wickets, but their whole game plan hadn’t really clicked, after a positive result against Marlow Park lots of hard work from the team when in during the week to getting ready for what Skipper Thompson knew would be a really tough game.

Unfortunately the game off to a poor start with some unacceptable behaviour and comments from Marlow’s fast bowler Thomas, unfortunately this inspired the Windsor team to really focus on the game, Windsor won the toss and Thompson had no hesitation in making use of a nice looking Windsor wicket, again Bird and Thompson opened taking the score to 30 without loss, until Thompson played a lazy shot hitting a half volley straight to square leg, Mirza came and went quickly bringing Young Gould to the crease, Bird and Gould batted superbly together, Thomas bowling extremely at them but they battled through, eventually Bird fell for his 79 this brought Granger to the crease who hit a quick 24 before being fooled by Thomas with a slower ball, T Smith soon departed bringing in the might of Watkins who failed to replicate his innings of last week, this brought Clarke in, again he showed good skills in rotating the strike with Mike Gould, the score board kept ticking along eventually Gould fell and Windsor kept nudging away ending up on 228 – 9, this was a very gettable score on a wicket that had played very well.

Skipper Thompson fired his troops up after tea knowing that a few early wickets and the key wicket of Paskins could mean 25 much needed points, what happened next was in Thompson’s opinion the best display of fast seam and swing bowling he seen for 3 years in this division, Granger and Griffiths were simply unplayable, the latter in a very Angus Fraser style bowling seam and swing at the perfect length and Granger bowling with real pace, they absolutely destroyed the Marlow batting line up rolling them for 64.

Windsor were obviously over the moon with this result, knowing what a good side Marlow are and to beat them this convincingly was a great effort. But Thompson being his normal Northern self knows that Windsor have to start again now, 1 win doesn’t make a season!

Windsor Vs Marlow Park at Marlow Park 4/6/06

Windsor travelled to Marlow Park slightly disappointed from the result the previous week. They had played so well and due to the points system had only received 7 points, Skipper Thompson especially as the points had no reflection on the game.

Thompson was determined to win the toss this week to make 1st use of a good looking Marlow Wicket, this is exactly what happened.

Again the opening partnership of Bird and Thompson worked well, with Windsor racing off to a great start, Bird again being especially savage on lose deliveries, Thompson was his usual steady self, and they took Windsor to 62 until the introduction of Javed, who bowled two unplayable balls, unfortunately one of these got Thompson, this brought Mirza to the crease who was looking for a score, which he certainly got, playing a superb innings being especially savage on Javed, Bird carried on smashing the ball to all parts, until he fell on 93, Mirza followed soon after for 60, which brought the loss of 4 quick wickets, one of them being Granger who got the second unplayable ball of the day, Windsors rear guard then shot into action with the classy looking Clarke and the Large bulk of Watkins, the later cutting lose and hitting 66 in no time, skipper Thompson batted on Windsor reached the 312 mark off 49 overs.

Some may say too many runs, but Thompson was cautious of the size of the grounds and miss hits go for 6, and the fact that Javed is capable of cutting lose as had the week before to reach 150.

Windsor bowling attack soon got fired up with Granger and Griffiths, Griffiths bowling especially well, Windsor getting a few quick wickets, which brought Khan and Javed to the crease, both batted well and the scoring rate started to increase, the granger vs Javed battle was on, Granger being unluckily as he keep forcing the batsmen into errors, eventually Granger won the battle with a brilliant caught and bowled, Windsor applied the pressure but Khan refused to budge, a couple more wickets fell but Windsor couldn’t get the wickets they required for maximum points.

Windsor took 13 points from the game which they were quite happy, as their performances have improved, but skipper Thompson knows there is a long way to go.

Windsor 1st XI Vs Thatcham Town 1st XI

Saturday 28th May 2005

Thatcham Town 266-5 (51 Overs) Etteridge 78, Johnson 70, Denness 50
Windsor 227-6 (49 Overs) Bird 73, Thompson 50

After a disappointing wash out the week before Windsor took on Thatcham Town, a game that Windsor skipper Peter Thompson thought would be a very closely fought contest, he was not proved wrong!

Thompson lost the toss and as expected were asked to bowl on what looked like a very good batting track, this was proved to be the case, Justin Granger made an early break through but after this it proved to be very hard work for the bowlers as the batsmen found runs easy to come by. Neither the pace of Griffiths or Granger could make the next break through, with the class of Etteridge still at the crease Windsor needed a change, he then brought on the spin duo of Watkins and Mohindru. Both started to bowl very well with good discipline, this brought the required pressure and then wickets started to fall, Thatcham lost 4 quick wickets, it was then time for a fight back from Thatcham as they carefully negotiated the next 10 overs, the number 5 and 6 batsmen started to accumulate runs then let loose with an attack on the Windsor bowlers, Johnson the Thatcham skipper taking a special liking to Granger, Windsor could do nothing to stop the onslaught and Thatcham finished on 266-5, this may have looked like a massive total but Windsor knew the wicket was very good and that they had the batting to take up the challenge.

After the interval regular opening duo Bird and Thompson took to the task of getting Windsor off to a solid and steady start, which they did both playing very well and complementing each others style, Thompson the steady accumulator, with Bird being savage on any poor deliveries, after 25 overs they had put Windsor in the box seat putting on a opening stand of 116, Thompson was then trapped lbw for 50 and soon after Bird was caught for 73, this brought to the crease the flashing blades of Gould and Smith who took the attack to Thatcham both playing extremely well, the runs required reduced all the time and things looked to being going Windsor’s way until Gould played a rash shot and was bowled, then Granger went quickly with another rash shot, then Smith, and Watkins followed, with 6 wickets down, and 4 overs left the instruction went out to play out for the draw which Mahmud and Millman did very well.

Windsor finishing on 227 - 6

So a draw was the result, which was disappointing as Windsor were on course for a big win at one point. Once again thought the Windsor Vs Thatcham match up proved to be great game of cricket.
